What Are the Four Things that Kill Relationships?

John Gottman is reputed to be able to listen to a couple for just a few minutes and tell with 91% accuracy whether or not they will divorce. In this article, Eric Barker discusses Gottman’s book, The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work, including “The Four Horsemen” that make up the core indicators Dr. Gottman uses to determine if a divorce is imminent. The Four Horsemen are Criticism, Contempt, Defensiveness, and Stonewalling. To be more specific, criticism is differentiated from complaint by attacking the person instead of the behavior. Contempt conveys disgust to a partner, which makes conflicts almost impossible to resolve.
