Everybody Has Buddha Nature

Over ten years ago, the Dalai Lama agreed to participate in a dialogue with a group of Buddhist teachers and psychologists in Europe. When the issue of self-hatred was raised, an issue that several of the psychologists’ patients suffered, the Dalai Lama was confused, never having been exposed to the idea. He wondered how people could feel self-hatred when, “everyone has Buddha nature.” Mother Theresa had an insight about humanity relating to the subject: that the biggest disease was the feeling of not belonging. Is it possible that our Western culture is a breeding ground for self-hatred and feeling out of place?
