Having low self-esteem works in such a way that the worse a person feels about themselves, the less energy they have to work towards increasing their self-esteem. Without effort to increase their self-regard, a person’s self-esteem will drop even more, creating a downward spiral. In order to increase self-esteem, a person needs to change both their thoughts and their behaviors. A good first step is to become proficient at something. Increasing competency at something that a person enjoys can turn that thing into a source of pride. Another step is to evaluate a personal sense of integrity and to make sure life is being lived under those principles.
