This article features examples of how we can bring compassion and empathy into our intimate conversations. The concepts, as described by Dr. John Gottman, are straightforward but can be difficult to apply in real life as they involve changing how we approach conversations. A simple rule to remember is not to offer opinions or problem solving until we’ve gone through the four steps of attunement. Offering advice immediately may be insulting, suggesting that the person can’t come up with a solution on his own, and also fails to engage on an emotional level or provide expected empathy.
