Understanding the Pain of Saying Goodbye

Separation from a partner, whether temporary or permanent, can be one of the more painful experiences in our lives. As humans, we are inclined to reach out and hold onto the people that we love, and when this “reaching out” is thwarted by a separation, we feel lost, hurt, and confused. Three reactions, protest, despair, and detachment, are common responses. Protest causes us to fight the situation and try to prevent it from happening; despair causes us to lose hope entirely; and detachment causes us to turn away defensively. We often vacillate between all three responses.
