Three Principles of Mindful Emotional Eating

Pavel G. Somova, Ph.D. offers three tips for approaching emotional eating in a more conscious manner, thereby reducing its harm. The goal is not to attempt to ban emotional eating altogether; rather, the goal is to shift one’s framework from reactive and unconscious emotional eating to conscious and mindful eating. The first tip is to accept emotional eating as a coping mechanism, not a failure. The second tip is to follow a “predictable eating ritual,” which has clear and defined start and end times. The third tip is to remember that emotional eating does not have to result in over-eating.
