Panic Disorder and Men: Courageous Conquerors or Just Brave Faces?

After struggling to convince the anxiety-driven men she knew in her personal life to share information about their anxieties for an article, writer Nichola Petts was inspired to professionally pursue exactly “what the deal is with guys and anxiety.” Petts met with psychologist Dr. Eliana Cohen, who has treated a wide range of anxiety ailments over the past fifteen years and offered insight into how anxiety affects males. Dr. Cohen confirmed the stereotype that men are actually raised to be brave and to avoid showing emotional weakness, but she also confirmed that men do suffer from anxiety. Anxiety is less common in men though, affecting about 2% of men, compared to 5% of women.
