Second, authentic forgiveness does not legitimize the other person’s behavior. Third, forgiving someone does not let them off the hook. Fourth, people just can’t deserve or not deserve forgiveness. In order for it to be effective, it has to be given freely. Lastly, though time is an important factor in creating forgiveness, it alone will not cure all ills. Working through your feelings directly is of extreme importance in keeping your relationship healthy.
