Managing Up: How to Keep Your Cool with Competitive People

With changing economic conditions and fewer available jobs, competition in the workplace is increasing, as is associated stress. There are several types of competitive personalities, from those with fragile self-esteem whose worth is dependent upon their most recent praise to the narcissist, who seeks out positions of power in order to exercise control. A competitive coworker may simply require your praise, or an arrogant neighbor may only need to hear of your accomplishments to give you the respect you deserve. The best strategy for dealing with competitive personalities begins with flexibility. Always re-evaluate your approach in these situations for effectiveness and make changes where needed.
