Being Logical is Not Always Good Communication

Everyone has been on both sides of this equation: we are feeling emotional and overwhelmed about a recent occurrence and our partner responds with a logical anecdote or approach and we feel completely unheard, even outraged. Or, our partner is highly emotional and we are not, so we try to offer something logical to help calm him/her down. It backfires. The problem in this situation is that offering something logical during an emotional time is not an effective way of communicating. It’s not what we want to hear when we are upset and it’s not what our partner wants to hear.
