Are You Lonely in Your Relationship?

Dr. Margaret Paul has often found that clients struggling with substance control and addiction are abusing the substance to escape feelings of loneliness. While loneliness might be associated with people not in a relationship, Dr. Paul has also found that many of the clients struggling with loneliness actually are in relationships. In fact, the relationship can be the cause of the loneliness. Loneliness is caused when a person wants to be connected with someone else, but there isn’t anyone available to connect with. In a relationship, this can be caused when one or both partners are withdrawn from each other for any reason.
