A Deeper Look Into Turning Towards Your Partner

The Gottman Relationship Blog often posts about methods of “turning” either towards or away from a partner’s bid for attention. Turning away from a bid basically equates to ignoring the bid for attention, while turning towards the bid is acknowledging it in a positive way. Learning to recognize bids for attention and different levels of turning either towards or away from them can help a person to know how to interpret and change their own behavior to bring themselves closer to their partner. Given a bid from one partner, asking, “Do you want to go out tonight?,” there are four basic responses: Nearly Passive, Low Energy, Attentive, and High Energy.
