Oprah.com shares seven quick ways to relieve stress as the busy holiday season begins, starting with the simple act of chewing a stick of gum. Researchers in Australia and England found that gum chewers felt less anxious and had 18% less cortisol in their saliva during stressful situations than other people. Dr. Andrew Scholey, the director of the Centre for Human Psychopharmacology and Swinburne University also commented that chewing increases blood to the brain, which can distract from stressors and make people more alert. A study at University College London also found that people who drank four servings of black tea a day for six weeks also showed lower levels of cortisol during stressful events.
